Age of Wulin

Age of Wulin screenshots show a Wuxia wonderland

I'm as much of a fan of improbably pretty martial arts movies as anyone yet for some reason, while games based on the ancient art of kicking someone in the face are common, those that share the fantastic setting of Chinese Wuxia movies are not.

Enter Age of Wulin, which is doing its best to plug a Jade Empire shaped hole in my heart. The free to play MMO is clearly inspired by the likes of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and House of Flying Daggers, and wears it's preposterous martial artistry on its sleeve.

Age of Wushu announced: a free to play martial arts MMO with no levels or classes

Tom Senior at

Age of Wushu is an intriguing free to play MMO from China. You play as a martial arts expert, but there aren't any levels or character classes. You learn your skills from one of eight schools of combat, and will be able to raid other schools to gain bonus knowledge and unlock more abilities. You'll be able to train your character outside of the game as well, using 30 "offline activities."

Expect lots of customisation, too. Apparently there will be more than 5,000 equipment upgrades, 17 progressions and aerial combat. The fighting style draws heavily from Wuxia genre, so there will be plenty of superhuman acrobatics and, as shown in the trailer above, water-running. It'll be released in the UK as well, under the name Age of Wulin. An "international test" is supposed to be starting soon. Keep an eye on the official Age of Wushu site for news of the beta.

Age of Wulin trailer knows kung fu, walks on water, defies physics

This trailer for upcoming free to play MMO Age of Wulin is clearly inspired by films like Hero and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. It shows off a lot of fast paced martial arts action and graceful movement, including leaping up walls and running deftly across across water, culminating in two characters fighting while standing on the surface of a lake.

Graham was impressed by Age of Wulin when we saw it at Gamescom last month, and it looks like it has some interesting ideas, one of the most unusual being that your character becomes an NPC when you are logged out, helping populate towns with offline players.

Age of Wulin is will be released next year.
