League of Legends event introduces new Ascension mode and desert map

Last week, we wrote that Riot Games was throwing out the lore League of Legends has built up over the past five years and replacing it with something new. Now we know what that something is, or at least what’s coming first in LoL’s rebooted fiction: a gameplay event tied to the desert empire of Shurima, which includes the launch of a new champion named Azir and a new game mode called Ascension.


Notch approached Microsoft about rumored Mojang buyout, says Bloomberg

Yesterday's all-but-unbelievable rumor is today's "looking like it might actually be so," as reports that Minecraft studio Mojang is on the verge of being acquired by Microsoft continue to surface. Even more interesting, the word on the street is that the idea of the buyout came not from Microsoft, but from Minecraft creator Markus "Notch" Persson himself.

FIFA 15 demo out now, teaches you bizarre celebrations

EA has released a demo for FIFA 15, ahead of the game's launch in two weeks' time. It's notable, because it's the first chance PC gamers will have to try the series' new Ignite engine—which previously only featured in the current-gen console versions of FIFA 14. With it, we'll have access to some pretty intense emotions. Also, for some reason, there's a new video explaining how to bother flags.


Endless Legend to leave early access next week

Endless Legend is Amplitude's fantasy follow up to Endless Space—replacing the surreal beauty of a tactically significant vacuum with vibrant terrain-filled hexagons. Amplitude are still writing this newest Legend, but they're almost finished. They've now announced that, as of September 18th, it will leave Steam Early Access for an official release.


Bundle Stars' new bundle offers all FEAR games for cheap

Double Fine have hacked into the very fabric of the universe, and changed reality's listing for Hack 'n' Slash from beta to fully released. That's actually not as hard as it sounds. You just tell people it's happened. Diablo 3 patch 2.1 emphasizes speeding through content, and that's a good thing

Diablo 3 normally isn't a particularly rushed game. The end of the world may be at hand, but it’s typically content to let you slice through the minions of Hell at your own pace, comparing loot and weighing stats as you go. That all changes with patch 2.1, which went live at the end of August. Both the new Greater Rifts and Seasons place an emphasis on speed, whether it’s in beating timed rifts for a chance at better loot or by competing against other players to reach the level cap anew (and pile up new weapons and transmog items in the process). Combine all that with powerful new legendary gems, and the result is a patch that injects Diablo 3 with a powerful shot of adrenaline.

DuoScreen wants to give your laptop monitor a sidekick

The desktop has so many advantages over the laptop: power, price, multiple monitors. A powerful gaming laptop has the advantage of portability, but we hate giving up the productivity of two (or three) side-by-side monitors. So do the creators of a soon-to-be Kickstarter called the DuoScreen, apparently: they’ve built a prototype laptop dock that, true to its name, houses a fold-out second screen.


Battlefield 4: Final Stand DLC promises a chilly trip to Russia

The Sims 4 review

There's a blithe naivety to the way that life is presented in The Sims that is either comforting or a little disturbing depending on your mood. The series is softly apolitical in the way that a Barbie house is apolitical, and by that I mean that it isn't apolitical at all. The Sims is loaded with assumptions about the way that people function and about the way that success in life is gauged, but it feels churlish to point them out because it's all just a bit of fun, isn't it. The Sims is set in a world where buying things is always awesome and everybody is twenty-five until they're sixty. Regardless of environmental aesthetic, the series has always been functionally and fundamentally Californian.
