Luke Hodorowicz is taking on the monumental (emphasis on mental) task of developing a city building simulation, Banished, all on his own. He took to Reddit recently with an AMA, which was a very interesting read about what that his development process is like, but also revealed some new basic details about the game. For starters, Hodorowicz thinks the game will sell for around $20, and is hoping for a January release, though this depends on final testing.
Square Enix has detailed the new content it added to Final Fantasy XIV in patch 2.1, which is now available to download. Most notably, the patch—titled A Realm Awoken—adds a new PvP arena, player housing, and The Crystal Tower, a new 24-player dungeon.
Oh, and it also used the opportunity to add a bunch of holiday-themed content to the game with this year's Starlight Celebration, which tasks you with saving a kidnapped snowman.
Payday 2 continues to crank out content for fans, including this week’s Christmas DLC—dubbed Charlie Santa Heist—which went out free to all players on Monday. To celebrate, Overkill released a surprisingly affecting trailer, assembled from the point of view of a 911 call, cell phone camera footage, and news helicopters.
Mike Donatelli, design director for Carbine's upcoming MMORPG WildStar, isn't exactly your friendly neighborhood developer. The games community could probably use a bit more folks like him. Back during PAX Prime, he tells me, a casual raider complained about how WildStar seemed designed to keep him from getting top-tier gear without joining a 40-man raiding guild. "Then don't play," Donatelli said. "We try to make it open so you dip your toes in and see if you like the game, but sooner or later you're going to have to commit."
Whenever a new creative sandbox appears, it's only a matter of time before it's compared to Minecraft. Despite the higher polycount, UemuU invites the comparison more than most. At times, it feels like a direct response to Minecraft's limitations as a community building platform; with flexible tools that are geared towards letting creators define, shape and share their ideas.
“I spent a year and a half writing mods to try to make [Minecraft] how I wanted it to be, and how the majority of people wanted it to be,” says UemeU's project lead Jeremy Hindle as he takes me on a tour through the game's creative potential. “Certainly there's a lot of influence that comes from it. Not so much directly from the game Minecraft, but from the community that was around it.” Given Hindle's experience with Minecraft and its community, it's clear he wants UemeU to be an evolved version of that same construction and consumption of creative content.
DayZ hasn't been on Steam Early Access for long, but it's spreading faster than a deadly necrotic infection. According to the big counter on the DayZ site, the multiplayer zombie survival horror game now has 201,514 survivors. It sprang straight to the top of the Steam sales chart minutes after release and, according to a tweet from developer Peter Nespesny, surpassed 150,000 survivors in 24 hours. Oh, and has 34,000 concurrent players on Steam. Blimey.
The Just Cause 2 multiplayer mod was released earlier this week, adding multiplayer support to the tropical island of Panau. It instantly became our mod of the week, and we jumped in together at lunchtime to see if we could survive the chaos.

It's a scattershot collection of quad-classed games, with each offering fully levelled in Windows, Mac, Linux and Android. For users of Google's mobile platform, it's a great excuse to circumvent the atrocious Google Play store, and be reminded that the system does have some games. For us desktop users, it's another chance to be inundated with cheap indies.

As shown by this launch trailer for Total War: Rome 2's now available Caesar in Gaul expansion, the new campaign you'll be fighting through is largely being fought because Rome really wanted some more war.
It used to be that the creativity of the Minecraft community would regularly leave people speechless. It was all "Blimey! Look at that wall!", and "Wowzers! There's the USS Enterprise"", and even "Hot diggity! A working computer!" Now, we've become somewhat desensitised. Unless you've fully recreated a country - real or fictional - you'll barely raise an eyebrow. For your consideration, then: a working 3D printer has been created inside of the game.
Telltale’s Game of Thrones is coming. The developer that brought adventure games back into the mainstream with its Walking Dead series, Back to The Future, and The Wolf Among Us, is developing another series based on the HBO show, which is in turn based on George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire books. It’s hot brand right now, with a built in and very loyal fanbase, PC Gamer staff included. Here’s what we’d like to see Telltale do with it.
It seems like Overgrowth has been in development forever. We've been covering it steadily since 2010, and while an alpha build was available to players for just as long, it might reach a much larger audience now that it's available on Steam Early Access for $25, down for the first time from the usual $30 for a limited time. Players who already pre-ordered the game will be able to add it to their Steam library and use the auto update feature to keep up with the latest alpha build.
Now here's an idea that makes a lot of sense: Take World of Warplanes' gameplay and monetization model, slap some Star Wars on top of it, and stand clear of the avalanche of money that's about come your way. That seems like the gist of Disney Interactive's announcement today that it is developing Star Wars Attack Squadrons, a free-to-play space combat game.
When we last heard about Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare at E3 2013, PopCap described it as a combination of tower defense and third person shooters. That description, along with the E3 reveal trailer made it sound like other tower defense—shooter hybrids (Double Fine's Iron Brigade and Robot Entertainment's Orcs Must Die! come to mind).
Like a carnival barker standing in front of a strange-looking circus machine, the wonderfully chaotic Just Cause 2 wants you to take a ride. Syncing up nicely with the official Steam release yesterday of its massive—and free—Multiplayer Mod, JC2 is seeing a steep discount. The 80 percent price drop to $3 on Steam for the standard version of the action game runs through December 19.
I am Clementine. You are Clementine. In the second season of Telltale's The Walking Dead, we are all Clementine. But what kind of Clementine will we choose to be? The Clementine who trusts no one and does whatever it takes to survive, alone, in the unforgiving new world order of zombies, and assholes who will inevitably become zombies? Or the Clementine who wants to find a new family, who believes there are still good people walking among the dead?
I love the contrast here. First there was Typing of the Dead: Overkill's Shakespeare DLC, classing up the faux-Grindhouse type-'em-up with phrases pulled directly from the bard. Now we're taking a hard swing in the other direction, with the Filth DLC replacing the game's many kill commands with some childish rudeness. Please note, the following post contains language that's both stronger and more puerile than the phrase "arse elbow conundrum".
Space exploration sandbox Rodina has been released to the public as an early access title. That's "early access" in lower-case, as the game is available through the developer's website rather than Steam's in-development holding cell. The benefit of this is a pay-what-you-want scale of purchase options, propped up by a generous hour-long demo. More than enough time to jet off into the vast unknown, explore a few asteroids, and - if you're anything like me - flail your ship around impotently as you try to find a flat surface to land upon.
Planetside 2's PU02 patch brings more optimisation, holiday distractions, and an absurd number of balance changes
Planetside 2 is a game about big numbers. There's the size of its continents, or the number of players warring on them, or even the statistical likelihood that I will crash a Mosquito seconds after getting into its pilot seat. Clearly, though, SOE are beginning to take this numerical dedication too far. They've just released the game's second Performance Update patch and, rather than stick purely to optimisation changes, they've also made a balance pass so extensive that its section of the official patch notes is over 10,000 words long.
There's something eerily fitting about the first few moments of this AC4 DLC trailer, as ex-slave Adewale talks about freedom while a YouTube annotation informs you of the "#AC4blackflag" Twitter hashtag. It speaks to the dichotomy at the heart of the series, in which well-researched recreations of history clash against past-future wizards, technomagic video games, and Nolan North. Oh, and there's stabbing too.
