Areal studio claims Kickstarter complaints are "addressed," but Vostok Games says otherwise

Andy Chalk at

The team behind the Stalker-inspired Areal said in a recent Kickstarter update that it has worked things out with Vostok Games and cleared up all the complaints against it. But a Vostok representative says that's not really what happened at all, and that it's been forced to let the matter drop because it can't actually do anything about it.

Vostok Games claim Areal Kickstarter campaign's use of STALKER assets is "not right"

Phil Savage at

Areal is a post-apocalyptic, open-world shooter that claims to be the "definitive spiritual successor to the cult hit S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series". Another claim: that its creators, West Games, are a team mostly "composed of former senior GSC Game World staff members". It's currently on Kickstarter, and it's looking for $50,000.

That's the basic starting point, but things get a lot more complicated. Vostok Games—a band of former GSC Game World staff and creators of the STALKER-inspired MMO Survarium—have taken umbrage to these statements, saying that West Games are fraudulently promoting themselves as core STALKER developers.

Survarium opens its doors for one-day beta access this Friday

Survarium—the Stalker-ish free-to-play online shooter—is preparing for "Doors Open Day" this Friday. Think of it like the opening of Pandora's box, only instead of all the world's evil, it's letting loose limited access to the game. And instead of a slow descent into guilt and madness, you've got a gun.

For 24-hours only, the game will be available to try in open beta, after which, its doors again slam shut. As early warning for what to expect, creators Vostok have created a video preview of the game's progress.

Survarium to enter closed beta, developer looking to boost player count

Survarium's unstoppable "green apocalypse" is creeping towards a closed beta development phase, according to a new dev diary from the folks at Vostok Games. An MMO/FPS hybrid set in a world of collapsing societies and strange anomolies, Survarium's latest update features new public footage from the shooter, as well as some details about the ways players can find an invite to help test the game.

Survarium trailer offers a bird's-eye view of PvP

This latest Survarium trailer is a pretty good showcase for the game's lovingly rendered ruined world, but it's also one of the more exciting 'let's show off one of our game maps' videos I've watched. It has a narrative and everything, telling the story of a sniper perched on top of an abandoned church, and some dude who tries to take him down. What is Survarium again? It's the free-to-play multiplayer shooter from former Stalker 2 devs, and you can still sign up for the alpha over here.

New Survarium alpha screenshots show off rust, decay, fog

New screenshots of Survarium, the online spiritual successor to Stalker, have surfaced from the game’s alpha development phase. Stalker, the fantastic first-person shooter with a legion of devoted fans, set expectations high for Stalker 2, which was then unexpectedly and unceremoniously cancelled. Since the sequel officially died, Stalker 2’s former developers have set up shop as Vostok Games to pursue an MMOFPS version of the game that never happened.

Get in here stalker: Survarium alpha set to expand soon

I still can't pronounce its name without adding an extra 'iv' in the middle - 'Survivarium' just sounds so much better to my ears - but I'm still champing at the bit to play this sorta-spiritual-successor to the Stalker series. Survarium is currently undergoing a selective alpha test, but as this tweet from the development team reveals, the rusty iron door to the survivalist MMOFPS is about to be opened a little wider. Head here to register for a chance to join the post-apocalyptic battle for survival, but remember to pack your Geiger counter.

Survarium game world detailed in new dev interview

Patrick Carlson at

It's nice to know that sometimes a headshot really is a headshot. Vostok Games has released some new details about its in-progress survival shooter Survarium in an interview with Worlds Factory. Designed as a free-to-play online first-person-shooter, the development team has now hinted at just how ambitious the post-apocalyptic MMO game world will end up being.

Here are the first screenshots out of Survarium's newly opened alpha

The S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series (and its excessive period use) has remained regretfully dead, despite whatever internet voodoo tricks its fans have tried in attempting to revive the series. Meanwhile, the developers' new project, Survarium, has become something more and more myth-like over the months, with its initial news fading into obscurity. But no more! Survarium's finally burst out of the fog with details on its alpha phase, which has just begun, and there are a couple of sweet screenshots to match.

Survarium opens alpha registrations for hardened survivalists

S.T.A.L.K.E.R and GSC may have long fallen to the harsh nuclear winter of game development, but some members of the team managed to crawl out of the wreckage. Their new studio, Vostok Games, is now set to emerge from their emergency bunker with the free-to-play MMOFPS Survarium. First though, diligent testing is required to ensure the multiplayer shooter has got what it takes to survive. That process is now open to applications - with alpha test sign ups now taking place.

Survarium interview: the devs talk about Stalker's spiritual MMO sequel

When GSC Game World went nuclear last year, it was feared that the Stalker series would be buried in the irradiated rubble. Instead, the ensuing months have seen no shortage of scavengers attempt to lay claim to the ownership of the gloomy open-world shooter. Meanwhile, the actual developers responsible for building its aborted sequel have dusted themselves off and set up on their own. Though their new project doesn't have the Stalker name, it shares a lot of its DNA - albeit mutated into a new free-to-play MMO form. Alexei Sytyanov, lead designer at the newly minted Vostok Games, tells us all about survival in their online wilderness.

STALKER 2 finally dead, developers move on to another apocalypse with Survarium

Rob Zacny at

If this post eventually descends into a stream of profanity or a black pit of despair, I apologize, but it is difficult to face such dire news: STALKER 2 is cancelled, and the team has moved on to another project the will let STALKER's "ideas and spirit live on." The new project is called Survarium, and it's a free-to-play MMOFPS and I'm just going to start drinking now.

Things have been murky for STALKER 2 since late last year, when GSC studio head Sergiy Grygorovych apparently surprised everyone by announcing he was shutting down the studio and the development of STALKER 2.
