It’s impossible to avoid the reductive pitch to Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor. It’s Assassin’s Creed set in The Lord of The Rings. Hopefully it’s a lot more than that—Monolith and Warner Bros. are certainly trying to present it that way—but even it’s not, that’s still a damn good pitch. Today, the companies announced we’ll be able to find out for ourselves when the game’s released on October 7, 2014. They also revealed what extra stuff you’ll get if you pre-order the game.

Monolith and Warner Bros. released the first gameplay footage for a new Lord of The Rings game, Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor. It’s eight minutes long, all of which are worth watching, an impressive feat given our eroded attention spans.

No One Lives Forever lives in licensing limbo

System Shock 2 may have shaken free from captivity, but there are plenty of classic games still trapped in a licensing no man's land, prevented from receiving a digital re-release. One of those games is No One Lives Forever, Monolith's 60s set comedy spy shooter. It was originally published by Fox Interactive, who were acquired by Vivendi in 2003, who merged with Activision in 2008. So do Activision have the rights? Their community manager Dan Amrich released a coded message, using an obscure cryptic language called English, about why Cate Archer has gone MIA.

Gotham City Impostors release date set for January 2012

Tom Senior at

Gotham City Impostors is a multiplayer shooter in which gangs of amateurs dress up as poorly conceived and possibly drunk versions of their favourite DC superheroes and villains to do battle. The idea is that they're ordinary people with ordinary lives looking to vent their frustrations in combat. Fights take place in hastily knocked up arenas based on famous Batman locations, but only when the superheroes are off saving lives in another part of town.

Gotham City Impostors now has a release date, January 10 next year, when it'll be available as a download title only. Find out more on the Gotham City Impostors site.

Why you must replay No One Lives Forever
