Default Which graphics card for gaming at 2560x1440?

I just ordered a new ASUS 2560x1440 display, and I'd like some suggestions on a graphics card to pair with it.

My CPU is an Intel i5-3570k. I'm currently running an HD7970, which I'll be putting in my living room machine to make room for a new GPU for my system. The GTX 780 Ti seems like the obvious choice, but I'm wondering if I HAVE to spend that much.

I play games like TF2, Bioshock Infinite, Borderlands 2, Battlefield 4 primarily. I'll also be playing a ton of Titanfall once it's released. I'd like to be able to run these games at max settings at 2560x1440. Thanks!

in truth your 7970 should be capable of running a 1440 screen, if anything I would say give the games a try with the 7970 first as you may not actually need anything.

I should have mentioned that the plan all along has been to use my 7970 in my living room machine, so my primary PC needs a new GPU anyway.

An AMD HD7970 is roughly equivalent to an AMD R9 280X, which as Belimawr points out would be a decent card for this resolution to test the water with.

But as your buying a new GPU anyway, for a single GPU setup at that resolution, i'd suggest either the AMD R9 290 or Nvidia GTX 780. These are good bang for buck compared to the price/performance difference from the 290X/780ti. And if you change GPU every couple of years, no need to spend a tremendous amount. I believe BF4 runs slightly better with AMD cards, although you will lose PhysX effects in the likes of Boarderlands etc... Performance is more important IMO.

Anyway, if i was in the market for a new single GPU at 1440p right here & now, the R9 290 or GTX 780 would be the ones i'd have my eye on. [edit] I should also mention as a disclaimer, lol, that It is rumored that the new GTX 800 series is out later this year as well.

I believe the 7970 should be well suited for that application, especially with 3 GB of memory. Add a second card in Crossfire if the FPS is not to your liking.
