I can remember it happening with steam but last time I saw that it was when they did a stupidly good sale price and a few too many people jumped at it.
as for direct2drive they were a terrible firm you could pre order a game and not get access till nearly 48 hours after release, how ever if you complained you got a code for any game free, stick it on another pre order as the majority of the time they failed at launches, complain again you got another free game my longest free game chain was 10 games, so I guess they were good as it saved me buying a lot of games but you never had to be wanting to play as soon as the game came out.
