We really have no idea how probable is is for life to start since we only have a data point of 1 (Earth). Yes it could be very unlikely that life will occur and for most Stars there could be no life surrounding them but for a tiny minority of stars with multiple planets in the correct orbits and made out of the right stuff and support life.

You would have thought with space travel we'd have had a higher culture than smashing rocks together and living in caves.

    But still; they come.

Yep, just the discovery of cells would cause widespread orgasms not only to science nuts but also to conspiracy theorists. It would be very interesting if they found a tiny creature. Some space ant or something.

All the data we do have on Earth seems to suggest where you have water you have life. There is some water ice on the ice caps. There could be a chance that there is some in some caves.

If you look at Europa there could very will be liquid water under the surface of Europa.

What would the conspiracy theorists say?

There are loads of cellular creatures that live inside ice, and as there is ice on mars, the possibility for life on Mars does exist, and then there are all the non cellular life forms to look for as well. Even if Mars is completely dead at the moment, that sill leaves open the question of it's fossil records being explored to see if life once existed there in the past. Last but not least, if there are other types of lifeforms in the universe, we might not even recognise them. For example there could be crystalline life which if we ever encountered we would probably be to busy making engagement rings and desk ornaments from, to recognise as life.

A large black obelisk, crashed flying saucer, alien footprint, Santa.

    Regards - Mr P
