Default MMO recommendations please

I'm convalescing atm & have a fair bit of time on my hands, I fancy trying one of the newer MMO's

Apart from WOW (which I didn't think much of) I've zero experience of them, I like the look of The Secret World.. is it worth checking out?
I'd appreciate any other suggestions.. doesn't really matter whether it's mainstream or a bit quirky, but ideally something that you don't need to pay to win/see content etc.

Thanks.

For the straight up game experience, I would say Guild Wars 2. Secret World, however, has the best atmosphere and quite a few intersting gameplay twists.

Does either game have a 10 day free trial yet? That would help get a feel for both games.

Tera. Has a real time action style combat system, and just went free, check it out.

I played Requiem online (this one) once, and I like it a lot. It's free and it has a great atmosphere... And that blue-skinned race is great! Try it, maybe you'll also like it.

Dungeon and Dragrons Online and Lord Of The Rings Online remain to be some of the best MMORPGs experiences I've ever had and they are both F2P.

Vangard is meant to be good and a bit different from the WoW clones.

I posted this earlier but somehow it ended up in the Crysis 3 thread instead of here which is absolutely bizarre. Anyway let's try again.

It's a shame there's no free trial for Secret World. I'd love to give it a try. Don't bother with Guild Wars 2. I assume if you're looking for an MMO you want longevity and you're just not going to get that with GW2. I mean, it's worth playing once because it's not BAD... it's just... there's no endgame at all. Not a single point in playing once you reach max level, which takes all of 2 or 3 weeks.
