Default Help me help you

    Hey,

    I'm trying to create a private forum for you guys, so you can keep your extra-special space fighting private.

    But it's a bit hard. There are two options that I can see.

    1) Create a password protecting forum visible to all online, but make you responsible for maintaining the security of that password.

    2) Create a usergroup and then allow the members of that usergroup see the private forum.

    I think the second way is probably more secure for you guys, but that creates a new problem: none of the PC Gamer staff can afford time to approve or dismiss applications to the usergroup. So we'll have to create some moderators with the power to do that. So - who should have the power to do that? And, does anyone within the Eve corp have the vBB madskills to help me set it up?

    Wouldn't the current mods be able to moderate it? If we can regulate the admissions to the usergroups then that would probably be the best option. The forum would of course need to be hidden to non corp members. Good to see that things are in motion though.

    Also: OMG ITS TIM!

    The second option would be best. As for who should have the power to moderate it, that should probably be the corp directors - namely me, Bimble, and Buceph. I have experience with forums in general, but I've never done much with vBB before - only PHPBB, SMF, and IPB. If I can be of any help though, just let me know.

    And thanks!

    Teh second option would be great Tim, and once again thanks for your support in this and in helping to get the Corp more fresh meat

    I set up a vB forum and used to admin it, I can help setting this up if need be. I'm not actually an Eve player though, I just use "today's posts" to read the forums, and saw this in passing :}

    Wicked,

    So - Omelette - does vBB allow moderators to administrate usergroups, or is that an admin only tool?

    You can make users leaders of the usergroup. That allows them to approve and deny requests. They don't necessarily have to be moderators. In the usergroup settings, set "Public (Joinable) Custom Usergroups" to yes. Anyone can join the group now until you assign a group leader. Back on the usergroup management list page, click the drop-down menu on the right beside the usergroup, select "add usergroup leader". Then you can type in a username and add them as leader. You can add as many leaders as you want. Then, on this page, people will be able to request to join the group, and the group leaders will be able to approve/reject. I tried this on a different version of vB from PCG's current one, so it's possible these settings may be different - let me know if anything I described isn't available.
