Latest letter to gaming community.
We sent this letter to our current beta testers, but as we are an open company trying to be as transparent as possible, I wanted to take a moment to share this message…
Hello testers of Firefall,
First, I wanted to take a moment to thank you all for being a part of the testing of Firefall. For many years, we worked on the game in complete silence. Not even our families knew what we were working on. In September of 2010, we took a huge risk and showed off the game for the first time to a live audience at PAX in Seattle. We had no idea how people were going to respond. Suffice to say, it knocked our socks off at the positivity of the response and it pushed us even more to make things happen.
At the following PAX in 2011, we announced our beta and began inviting a small group of people shortly after. Many of those people are still playing with you all now. We grew extremely slowly and cautiously due to the depth of what we are creating and because of our own limitations as a small team of developers. Most recently we’ve started inviting larger and larger waves with the last wave of potential invites being over 40,000 people.
We’ve had our bumps, we’ve had our bruises. We’ve still got a ways to go. But I am pleased to announce that we are now ready for the next phase of the Firefall beta.
On Monday, April 2nd, we will be turning the servers on and leaving them on 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
This is a huge step for us, and a huge risk. We hope that you’ll bear with us as we figure out all the little issues that can occur during a 24/7 operation. We also need to limit our coverage for support and operations. Our operations team will generally only be available during business hours 10am- 6pm PST for server issues. They will, however, be on call during non-business hours to fix any issues that come up, but this is not guaranteed until we expand our operations staff to fully support 24/7 servers. Expect some rough patches after hours and on weekends. However,
Red 5 SpecOps, our support staff will be available 7 days a week from 7am to 10pm Pacific time.
That brings us to the next big phase of the beta… At PAX East 2012 starting Friday, April 6th, the attendees of PAX will be playing the live beta with the rest of you. They will have the same experiences that you have and enjoy in the same trials and tribulations. This is a huge moment for us as a community to show people how much fun the game can be.
I ask that each and every one of you take time to make sure that people are having a good time. It’s important to the success of this community, and Firefall as a product, that people walk away from PAX with a positive experience. There will be issues. There will be bugs that haven’t gotten fixed. I ask that you please keep those complaints contained to the forums rather than in-game chat so that people are not inundated with problems rather than experiencing a fun game for the first time. But most of all,
Show the PAX attendees what the Firefall community is all about
All of those that play Firefall at PAX will be welcomed into the beta when they return home. So these people will also become members of this beta community. Welcome them with open arms. Wait until they are comfortable before shooting them in the face. Help them out in chat. Group with them, offer help on how to play the game. Help us fully convert PAX attendees to Firefall supporters!
And now the biggest announcement of this thread… Since everyone at PAX will have access to the same content you have access to, it wouldn’t be fair for them to be able to talk about those experiences while all of you are kept silent. The NDA will be lifted on Friday, April 6th at 10am Eastern (the same time players at PAX are able to play).
Remember that any footage or screenshots captured before Friday, April 6th at 10am Eastern are still considered under NDA. You will need to take new footage, new screenshots, and explain the content as it exists, not how it used to exist.
So to recap…
•Beta so far has been awesome. And we are extremely happy with how this community has pulled together to help make Firefall a better game.
•On Monday, April 2nd, the beta servers will be turned on 24/7.
•Red 5 SpecOps customer support will be available 7 days a week from 7am to 10pm Pacific time.
•Operational support may require time to fix things, so expect random downtimes.
•PAX East players will be playing live on the beta servers.
•On Friday, April 6th at 10am Eastern time, the NDA will be lifted. Share your experiences.
Good time to consider joining!
