    Default Some advice please..

I am looking at getting a new graphics card and would like some advice on what to get. I currently have a Nvidia GeForce GTX 285 and until COD Black Ops and Fallout New Vegas i have had no problems. I am looking at the new GeForce GTX580 but having seen the PCGamer rig uses the GTX 46O was wondering if anyone was able to recommend it or any other card for that matter..
The problems i am having with games such as Black OPs is it is constanly stuttering and trying to catch up with itself, there is no let up while trying to play and spoils the whole experience. The problem with New Vegas is everytime i get into a fire fight everything slows down and stutters. This only happens when their is a fire fight or a battle with more then one enemy.

    My Processor is a: AMD Athlon 64 x 2 dual core processor 5600+, 2800Mhz (2 core) with a GTX 285.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

If you can afford a GTX580, you should definitely get it. It will give you playable framerates in any game at 1920x1200.

You're gonna want to upgrade that CPU as well. Grab you a Phenom II X4 to go with the 580 and you'll be set.

to be honest it is possible that the slowdowns are due to your cpu and not your graphics card, unless your running a ridiculous screen size the 285 should easily be able to max those games out. what socket is that cpu, if its the 939 then its more likely the problem.

    This.

On the back of my Fallout New Vegas box, it does say that the game is enhanced for Multi-core, so the CPU could be the problem, as that GTX 285 is a very good last generation top end card. And cramming a GTX 580 into that rig is going to be a waste, as you wont get the most out of it while the CPU still holds you back.

You could build a new rig, and simply put in your GTX 285 and it will still be great for games for quite a while. AMD's 6970 comes out soon too. So while you build/sort out the rig and hold off on the GPU upgrade, there could be a price war with the top cards if AMD pull something out the hat, and you might save some money, or heck, switch to AMD

EDIT: may wanna build it before VAT goes upto 20% next year.

yeah you want a better CPU I have a GTX470 with a AMD 64 X2 5700 clocked at 3.2ghz and it gives a visible slowdown on what the card should be capable of.

so getting a GTX580 would be totally pointless as your CPU would never keep up with it.

it will be in january to pay for the debt the country is in, its 17.5 at the moment. you lot across the pond would probably go insane if you had to pay what we pay for certain things in this country. £1.18 a litre of fuel (you go by the gallon dont you? thats around $9 a gallon) with around %60 of that going to the gvt.

Thats insane! I never will understand that thinking. How do these idiots in power actually think things are bad globally because we're not paying enough taxes or because the government isn't spending enough?
