Default Sound advice

I'd quite like to upgrade my PC's sound a bit. I'm looking to achieve two things:

    1. A better headset. I've got a 5.1 set that's ok, but getting a bit old now, not the greatest quality.

    2. A setup where I can have 2 or 2.1 speakers, but just plug in a headset and have that override the speakers.

I value low signal to noise and a quality sound (though I'm no audiophile). I also value good directional sound in gaming, though I'm not sure if you need a 5.1 or 7.1 headset to do this, or if a regular stereo headphones produce a good surround effect with a decent sound card? Infact I don't know if you need the sound card these days, do the usb headsets do the job well?

I've got an x-fi fatality somthingorother sound card in pci-express, though I'd happily swap this for something else if it gives me the setup I want.

So yea, recommend me a headphone/speaker/sound card setup that fits the bill.

What's your budget? With the headset, I'm probably going to recommend headphones and a separate mic because headphones sound much much better for the price you pay. For directional sound, all you truly need is stereo headphones that have a large soundstage.

Do you already have speakers? Or do you need new headphones and speakers?

If you just need new headphones, I would suggest the Audio Technica AD700 and the Zalman ZM-MIC1, both of which can be found at Amazon.

Thanks for the tips, do probably have some speakers in the loft somewhere perhaps.

    I'm thinking this:

    http://uk.creative.com/p/sound-blaster/sound-blaster-zx
(Because of the external module with the built in mic for connecting headphones, and how it lets you switch from speakers to headphones without unplugging anything).

    And your headphones.

Sure, that would work. You could also save some money and just get a Z although I don't know if it can to speaker/headphone switch thing.
