Marriage as a religious institution (which it started as before it somehow became a legal one as well) is the business of the God botherers to decide as far as I'm concerned. If you want the blessing of an apparently homophobic god for your homosexual partnership, take it up with the pope. See if he can pick up the yellow phone and talk the man upstairs around.
If you want to have a 'civil partnership' with all the religion sucked out of it so you can sign a contract and gamble half of your belongings on semi-temporary emotions and tax breaks the church has no business meddling in legal matters. It's no longer a Christian ceremony, butt out.
Personally I think let's just flip a coin, get it over with and concentrate on the shit that actually matters.
I've been saying for years that marriage is obsolete and should no longer be recognized in law but that's beside the point. And of course everything that comedian you linked said is completely right.
I don't know whether I agree that marriage was a religious thing before it was legal though. We can't possibly know that. Marriage already existed before the first known instances of recorded history so how it started can only be guessed at.
