Default Tolkien Estate sues Warner Bros

Tolkien Estate sued Warner Bros for supposed copyright infringements. This is slightly worrying, given how amazing Lord of the Rings Online is. I'd rather not see it die because of bloody solicitors and greedy "sue everyone for anything" types. I was looking forward to new game content

Just weeks before the Dec. 14 release of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, the estate of Lord of the Rings author J.R.R. Tolkien has filed an $80 million lawsuit against Warner Bros. claiming the studio is "usurping rights to which they are not entitled" in merchandising Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, specifically online games and gambling slots.

How close is LotR online to the lore of the books?

I find most LotR games stick mages in left right and centre which annoys me since magic us ably really practised by minority of people.

It's relatively true to the books, but does take some liberties to make the world more interesting but where it does that it looks to the lore for reference. For example it will add extra factions in places to make them interesting, but will look to nearby existing factions for inspiration and will use Tolkien's languages to name them. There is a mage class but it's called "Loremaster" instead of wizard, but function more or less the same. If you're an absolute diehard fan with little flexibility in terms of suspension of disbelief then you might not like it, but for most people it's close enough to be fun.

Think of it more as a true to source adaption of Tolkien's world like the movies were rather than a carbon copy and you won't go too far wrong, and I imagine Tolkien himself might have approved. It's hard not to imagine him being vividly interested in the sculpting of online worlds.

I might give it a go then. I will just have to ignore all the people throwing fire balls everywhere

What is the free to play aspect like?

Awesome. You can play through all of the main storyline with not a dime spent. As you play you earn currency to get the content on the side.

I ran through that game with no a single cent spent and enjoy every lvl and content I unlocked.

According to another article I read, it's not aimed at LoTRO but at some facebook games. There was a Slot Machine Game that was LoTR based and this is what the Tolkien Estate took issue with.

The LotR gambling games on FB are stupid and I hope they get slammed, but it would be horrible if arner Bros lost the license entirely and had to bail on Lord of the Rings Online.

The online game has become crap after it went free to play actually...I played it in beta and then after it went live for awhile but left soon before it became free to play as it had gone to crap as they moved much to far away from the books

Really? Well to each their own I guess, but I found it quite the opposite. Each expansion is bigger and better than the last and the free to play model is excellently done. It's still very much in sync with the books, but again it's best to look at it as an adaption rather than anything since some liberties had to be made to make the game enjoyable but I found it to be very in the spirit of Tolkien.

I'd be curious as to what you made of the movies though.
