Smile Upgrade Assistance

Hi, looking for some help in picking some upgrades for my system Mainly looking at upgrading the case and the processor however I'm not sure whether my current motherboard would be able to fully 'appreciate' a new processor so may need to upgrade that as well. Here are my specs:

Case:Coolermaster Elite 330 Black Mid Tower Case
Motherboard: MSI H67MA-E35 Intel H67 (Socket 1155) DDR3 MicroATX Motherboard - (Sandybridge) **B3 REVISION**
Graphics Card: MSI GTX 460 Cyclone OC Edition 1GB GDDR5 Dual DVI Mini HDMI Out PCI-E
Processor: Intel Core i5 2300 2.8GHz Socket 1155 6MB Cache
Power Supply: Corsair 600W CX PSU - 2x PCI-E 6x SATA
RAM: Crucial 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600Mhz Ballistix Sport Memory Kit CL10 1.5V
Hard Drive: Toshiba (500GB) (Not quite sure on this one, bought from a retailer, its descent but as I dont have the case in front of me at the mo cant check =S)

Any other revisions or suggestions would be appreciated, Thanks everyone =D

The Motherboard is a low-ish chipset & not feature packed. But atm you wont see any hughe gains from changing from that i5 2300, unless you upgraded the M-board to a P or Z based chipset, changed to a i5 2500k/i5 3570k & OC'd like a madman. Which imo, would be a waste of money.

The Corsair Carbide 300R is a nice case. And you may want to consider upgrading your GPU to one of the new GTX 600 series which will slowly be released over the remainder of the year, or one of the AMD 7000 series, but imo, i'd reccomend you to wait. That would give you the most benefit.

What Rez do you game at ? & what is your budget/currency ?

That Rez seems pretty small, maybe a new 23"-24" monitor would help you enjoy your games more. As part of the upgrade.

My Reccomendation then, would be:

New case = Corsair Carbide 300R Case (or one of your own choosing)

New Monitor = LG IPS235V - AOC i2353Fh - Dell Ultrasharp U2412M (or one of your own choosing).

Then just wait & see what the rest of the GTX 600 serie is like & upgrade your GPU later on. See what others suggest.

That could be a good idea thinking about it, looking at it now I figure maybe go for a MSI GeForce GTX 680 TwinFrozr III OC, new case to improve cooling and such, maybe a new monitor, reckon as you said before I should probably leave the processor but still not sure if taking these upgrades into account a new motherboard is a good idea or not.

=D cheers for your help, if you have any more suggestions I'll be glad to hear them

Your Welcome. The GTX 680 is very nice, your current card is no slouch, so no need to jump into buying one right away. You could upgrade the case & monitor happily, Then hold on and check out the GTX 670/660/650 as they should be a bit more easier to swallow price wise, but with enough mind blowing performance increase from the 460 to be a worthy upgrade.

Thanks again, one minor question about the new case upgrade I was thinking about, one I'm looking at comes with about 5 fans, the only thing is my motherboard has (last time I checked) just three connectors for fans, would this be a problem or can you just hook them directly up to the power supply.

My recommendation would be case, a boot SSD and more storage (2TB drive) and a nice big monitor.

You're GPU and CPU are still fine I say, mostly the CPU, the GPU I guess is a bit old but that doesn't stop it from being highly capable still.

I'd say grab a 1080p monitor (TN-panel LEDs retail for £100 now), 670 (rumour is £250 but I expect £300) and, if there's cash left, a 128GB M4 (£100)

the case is only functional, but having just swapped cases myself I can't justify the hassle unless you're gonna need the cooling for dual-GPU or extra space for a water-loop
