Default So, what do you think?

    Hi guys,

I'd be interested in hearing from those of you who were in the beta weekend. What were your first impressions? Any problems? Any particularly cool moments? I've played a lot of GW2, and it'd be great to get your take on it.

First Impressions - Holy Hanna this is awesome!

I wasn't really sure what to expect when I first got in. Like many, I watched the youtube's, I read the forums, I explored the wiki, but none of these give you an inclination as to the game feel, as taking your first steps into a new world.

I spent the first couple of hours exploring the human area, remembering fondly your comment's in the preview and really enjoying my first taste of engineering skills and as I was on ventrillo with several like minded individuals, someone chirpped up, "so who's doing world vs world?" Like a light buld in a dark room, I really wanted to see this and off I went.

Archernick picked a good server. All weekend, we dominated wvwvw. Each reset per day gave us new server's to overcome and we stormed through each of the worlds with ease, though our second day was iffy towards the end, but as I was sleeping, I can only hope we won.... but wow, these were good fights, reminding me of some good ol'days of Warhammer.

I really am looking foward to this game. Having played the first GuildWars, nothing could have prepaired me for the changes that came in GuildWars 2.

Well, I had too.... being me.

    and lastly..

    Cute puddy tat!

Conclusion - HOLY HANNA THIS IS AWESOME!

Whilst there is plenty to keep ArenaNet busy, with lots of little issues, lag and other bugs we found, at this point, I would seriously have handed over my money to continue playing today, if given the choice.

It definitely needs more murlocs and gnolls

On a more serious note, I loved it ! Although optimization was kinda bad (apparently it was kinda common for people to have low fps constantly, and yes yes it's beta) the game was just so good that it got me hooked.

I loved the combat, it felt fluid and dynamic at the same time, I especially like the weapon swap, creating new ways to play your character in a totally different way. The classes felt unique and I want them all but guardian is definitely my fav. with warrior on a close 2nd

PvP was a lot of fun, WvWvW was okay but I think normal battlegrounds were way more fun. I reckon that with more guildies (and therefore more coordination) WvWvW will get a lot better.

Quest system, although they didn't reinvent the wheel, I liked how you could just explore to your likings and get new quests all out of the blue and usually several ways to complete them. There's interesting places when it comes to exploration, tathar, gunny and I spent a couple of hours in the morning trying to get to a secret vault just for the sake of exploration (Hah nick!) and it was very rewarding to finally get it, although the loot itself wasn't

The world events, although they repeated every now and then, were still a lot of fun, more MMO's should look at this example and refine it. It promoted group play even though you weren't forced to group to get credit. Some may disagree and say it doesn't help to create bonds and such, but I liked that detail. The swamp demon event (which I did about 3 times) was a lot of fun for example.

All in all, everything I was expecting and then some, apart from the graphical issues but hoping it's sorted soon. Eagerly awaiting for the next beta with PCG

PS - Long text but just goes to show how much I really want this game lol

well, i know that i had a heck of a lot of fun. (images are bloody huge so am linking the location insted

Saturday night was bloody awesome. Nick, Gunny and Myself all decided to put our gold into one pot and bought a Golem before proceeding to completely decimate the Red boarderlands! (after.... all the greens had gone to bed.. but still!)

After that, we found hints of a mysterious Vault in the Boarderlands that we needed to collect parts of a Key... wait a sec, what game are we playing again?

heh, anyway. here is Myself, Gunny and Hakary and Nick is MIA, finding the second half of the key and opening the vault:

Overall I was very impressed. The event system saved a lot of tedious hunting down NPCs and clicking if nothing else. Some pacing and balance issues with the scaling that I'm sure they'll polish up before release. Being able to right-click collectible/crafting items and have them sent directly to your characters storage bank was nice. Had another friend who was extremely happy to discover your friends list lets you chat and track your friends even if they're on other servers. Of course the artwork continues to blow my mind. Was able to turn most of the graphics settings to high (did turn down shadows, but that's just my personal preference) with my Radeon 5850 and only got minor slow downs in big fights where a dozen or more people were engaging monsters and bosses. Stories wont win any Pulitzer prizes, but they were varied and interesting. Actually finished all the story stuff they had available for my norn ranger.

Took a while to really get a feel for how I wanted to play my characters. The fact you have to keep killing trash mobs to unlock skills 2 through 5 for your weapon(s) got a little old at first. But after about 90 minutes you can unlock all the weapon skills available for your profession. Maybe a bit longer for thief since skill 3 changes if you have two different weapons in your hands.

I also thought getting your traits and utility skills unlocked could have happened a bit sooner and been better explained, but that's just me.

I did do a few things I hadn't bothered with in other games: 1) I found and completed a jumping puzzle in one of the pve areas, 2) I actually role-played my characters instead of just randomly selecting responses to NPCs and 3) I spent a couple hours checking out the crafting system and was actually able to make a few weapons for my characters and one random person who helped me through a story instance. I have to say I enjoyed those aspects more than I thought I might.

EDIT: I will also mention that for some reason, I actually got useful item cool and/or interesting loot drops. My luck with getting things I wanted/needed in GW1 was almost non-existent. So that was a nice change of pace. lol

I had a blast too. One thing that stood out for me was the human city (I only rolled one toon) - it's the first MMO hub since Ironforge that made me want to go explore it. Lot's of NPC's going about their business and even some 'free' xp for discovering points of interest made it a win-win for me.

    Default Impressed

To start im going to say how much i love dungeons and raiding, i have never liked any mmo that did not offer me a solid base in these things; i have always hated levelling, never getting more than 1/2 characters to max level in any game ever.

With this said i hope you understand how much it means to say i a love the pvp and levelling in this game, its dynamic events are fun, challenging and most importantly of all optional. I like levelling so much i got 4 characters up to about level 10 (experimentalist being my fave). One thing i will say about world pvp is that it need some more organizational features(possibly just more defined guilds will achieve this though) Cant wait till next beta, cant wait till release.

    Default Crappy performance!

To be honest I can not fault GW2, it's beeyootiful, Though not on my 18 month old laptop which actually really surprised me. I felt personally affronted about my laptop's lack of speccyness, and that is despite many attempts at improving the speccyness with the additional pairs of sunglasses that are sitting on it... You could say I took it rather personally and as such I am building a new monstrosity that will play a fine game of Gameboy Tetris...

Other key requirements apart from the electronic junk that will be rammed into the behemoth include where exactly the mini-bar will be installed inside the hulking mass that I laughingly refer to as the computer case. And should that mini-bar be finished in mahogany?

Just remember folks... In Soviet Russia, You don't use computer, computer uses you!
