    Default Help a soldier out

Hey PCG forums, i just got done with 4 months of Infantry OSUT and I am looking to build myself a good rig. However i have no idea what is good/bad anymore because i have been completely out of the loop. Was wondering if anybody would be so kind as to throw me together a parts list with a budget around 12-1300 dollars US. Would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The US high-end build will have changed a bit since the release of the Ivey bridge chip (this week) and the new Nvidia 680, but this will definitely get you started.

For your budget, i'd look at an Intel Sandy Bridge i5 2500k + GTX 680 build now. Or if you can wait untill the 29th of April, Intel Ivy Bridge + GTX 680 maybe an option too.

If you have a decent audio setup, a bang for buck soundcard like the Asus Xonar DG 5.1 maybe a worthwhile investment .

What monitor(s) resolution are you going to be playing on ?

Is Ivy Bridge still not out in the US? Well I have A 3570K system running right now, and I'm not very impressed. It's A bit better than A 2500K both @ stock. I got it OC'ed to 4.6GHz but after that the heat raises exponentially. The 3570K @ 4.6 is identical to A 2500K @ 4.90/5.0 so I guess that's good. The price difference in my country is 45EU though, not worth it i.m.o.

Not as far as i can see, using Newegg as my guide nor is it in the UK yet, with the same deduction technique. April 29th is the release date i've seen banded about.

Going from an i5 2500k to an i5 3570K wouldnt be worth it anyway, for the reason you found out there.

I'd say it depends on price too, if the 3570K is unreasonably priced over the 2500K , then yeah, you may as well just get Sandy it seems.

ivy looks to be a tad cheaper than sandy

    i5 2570k has an MSRP of $220 vs $230 for a 2500k

    same with the 3770k $310 vs $320 for a 2600k

it's not much, and it might not be noticable at retail, but it's a good sign for when Haswell arrives
