    Default Upgrading to GTX 780

    Hi everyone.

My apologies if this is in the wrong place.

Basically I am wanting to obtain a GTX 780 3GB.

    My current rig is:

    MOTHERBOARD: Z68AP-D3 Gigabyte
    CPU: Intel i7 2600k
    GPU: Nvidia GTX 580
    MEMORY: 16GB 1600mz
    POWER: 750 watts
HD: 2X WD cavier 1tb each and 1x 40gb intel ssd.

    My question is.

Can I stick a GTX 780 into this set up? and if so will it work correctly?

I have done some research and come to the conclusion it will work, but obviously my mobo only supports pci 2.0 so im asking how much it will affect this?

And also whether the cpu I have would effect the performance of the 780.

    Thanks guys.

    Default Thank you

    Hi,

Thank you for your quick reply.

    That is brilliant news.

However I have one more question.

What difference would there be between running it on pci 2.0 and a pci 3.0?

Very little, if you notice any in real world gaming i'd be surprised.

Depending on your version of BIOS, you may need to upgrade it.

I had a BIOS that was dated 3/9/2012, and I needed to upgrade it for the card to work properly. I would get all kinds of problems before, like code A6, 62, AE etc.

So keep that in mind when installing the card.

Yep, there is no perceivable difference between PCIE 2.0 and 3.0. Now if you were gonna run 3 780's then maybe you'd saturate the lanes enough that the 3.0 would start to make a difference. Even then I don't think it would be that big a difference.

Believe me, running 3 670s on Ivy Bridge is a bottleneck because they run at x4.

OK well basically I have never fiddled with the BIOS before.

I have changed a setting here there, for example I was originally in a RAID set-up and found that I need to change a few things in the BIOS to reinstall Windows and separate the drives up.

But thats about as far as my knowledge goes.

Which in your opinion would you say is the simplest?

I will figure out now whether i need to update it or not.

    Thanks.

For me, updating it through Windows was the easiest. It was literally like installing a software. Nothing different. It does depend on the utility that your motherboard manufacturer is supplying.

My suggestion is to figure out a way to update the bios before you get the GPU. That way, when you get the GPU, you could plug it, update the drivers, and you are good to go. I always recommend to do the prep work first.

It really isn't all that difficult. Literally took me 20 minutes to figure out the whole thing, and I have never updated my motherboard bios prior to this.
