Default Best Mods for Half Life 2?

I just received a copy of Half Life 2 from someone. One of the reasons I wanted this game was because of the amazing mods I've seen for this game. As soon as i get finished playing the actual game I'm gonna be trying out some of them that I already have in mind.

But what are some of your favorites?

p.s. if you could also leave a link to where i could download the mod, that'd be awesome. thanks!

Two really excellent standalone campaigns are:
Minerva - available directly on Steam, just search it, it should come up. Really well designed, excellent use of verticality. Free, of course.

Mission Improbable - Really good (and funny) campaign by a couple of professional level designers. http://missionimprobable.org/index.html

- Insurgency
- Weekday Warrior
- Goldeneye Source
- Source Forts (if people are playing still)
- No More Room In Hell
- The Stanley Parable
- Portal Prelude
- Fortress Forever
- Garry's Mod

Those are from the top of my head, cannot remember any others.

I can't believe I forgot Black Mesa Source. You can get it from their website (http://release.blackmesasource.com/) or wait for it to come out (for free) on Steam (it just got Greenlit). It's a total conversion mod of the original Half Life into the Source engine. Finished except for the Xen bit, I think.

i thought Black Mesa was its own game. so is it free then?

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I've had my eye on this one for a while and it'll probably be the 1st one i try. just wondering if anyone else has tried it out or heard anything good/bad about it?

Eternal Silence http://www.moddb.com/mods/eternal-silence

The only thing i don't like is that it appears to be a multiplayer mod, hoping it has single player, as that's more of what i'm interested in.
I'm really into space games/sims and if any of you guys know of anything else like this, please let me know. thanks

Yes, Black Mesa Source is free. Since it was a mod team and they're not paying for the engine license, they can't charge for it. Even though it's pretty much professional quality.

It is a standalone game though, you don't install the mod through HL2, you install it like any other program.
