I must have killed literally thousands of undead in eastern and western Plaguelands in the grind from 55 to 60. There was nowhere else to go, that was the end game then.
And I remember the shock when I leveled my first character to 40 only to find that I would have to quest at least another 3 levels and sell everything I had in order to afford my first ground mount.
There was fun, and a huge sense of achievement when you finally got somewhere in the game. But I wouldn't want to go back to how the game was then. And anyway times have moved on. We all expect our games to be much more polished and professional than they were six years ago.
tbh (although I swear I'm not coming back) as much as some of it was grind, I found the reward in Vanilla of getting high end stuff nigh unbeatable, the amount of effort I had to put in to get my "Robes of the Archmage" oh man those where the days. But one of the highlights still had to be the first delve into 25 man raiding with the open world raid in EPL. As much as that place was a grind it truly did have some epic times.
