I remember when I was first levelling my warlock in very early TBC. I almost stopped playing purely because of the 40 - 58 grind. There was nothing "epic" feeling about killing endless mobs in Eastern plaguelands, which was one of the worst zones blizzard have ever made ever. Questing now has become a series of stories, and pretty good ones too.
I wonder whether WoW is your game Narkrud if you truly mean what you say. If you want proper adventures, play Mass Effect or Dragon Age. In terms of exploration WoW is still the biggest and most expansive game out there, by a long shot. I think you may be remembering the older game with rose tinted spectacles, as alot of the old school levelling was really, really poor.
