Arma 2 montage is a love letter to cooperative military simulation
Shack Tactical is a particularly wonderful Arma 2 hardcore community. Its guide-manual is probably the best resource for Armaers that want to play seriously. Above, I’m sharing Shack’s nine-minute distillation of a year’s worth of Arma: ambushes, missions-gone-FUBAR, heroism, and concentrated realism. Even if Arma or mil sims offend you, watch the hell out of this and delight in what PC gaming lets us do.
God, that Carl Gustav shot at 1:50 is nuts.
Left 4 Dead 2 custom campaign critique: Questionable Ethics
Of the pile of custom L4D2 campaigns I’ve played, Questionable Ethics has stuck with me most. It’s filled with surprise; a white-walled gauntlet of mystery and torture that you must, must, must download. I introduced Tyler and Chris to the four-stage campaign, then we sat down to talk about it.
Mojang releases Cobalt alpha, you can buy it
Honoring its unexpected promise, Mojang has made Cobalt—it’s first third-party published game—available for sale today. Head to www.playcobalt.com to take a look. Like Minecraft, the side-scrolling, 2D, multiplayer platformer has been released as an alpha that’ll be updated over time. If you have a Minecraft account, you can use it to buy and access Cobalt.
Dungeons of Dredmor adds Emomancy, danger, Veganism in “Realm of the Diggle Gods” expansion
Gaslamp Games has released a $2.99 expansion to Dungeons of Dredmor, a roguelike we’ve come to cherish through 2011. For the price of a small hamburger, you can inject new skill trees, items, monster types, and more ways of being killed by one of our favorite indie games of the year. Buy it on Steam here.
I’ve pasted a breakdown of the expansion’s major content within. I think I’ll roll a vegan, vampire Emomancer tonight when I get home. Finally, an RPG that lets me build a Twilight character.

Indie spotlight–The Haunted: Hells Reach
Tyler and Lucas sat down in our podcast studio to chat about an indie gem that’s temporarily silenced the orphan-like cries that usually rise from the PC Gamer Intern Pit. The Haunted: Hells Reach falls roughly into the same group of gory, cooperative, survival shooters occupied by Left 4 Dead, Killing Floor, Dead Island, and Serious Sam, but with a bit more kung-fu, from what I can tell.
Man, check that back-to-back headshot at 1:21. Nice one, Lucas.
Tribes: Ascend’s mental math showcased in new trailer
Do not adjust your monitor; it’s perfectly normal for complex calculus to flash before your eyes when waging war in Tribes’ high-speed battlefield. Today Hi-Rez publishes a video that expresses the unique, blackboard-like brains of skilled players in Tribes: Ascend. The game is due next year, though it’s sort of soft-launched already—you can access the beta immediately by pre-ordering or by finding yourself a key.
See some of our own skill shots in Gavin’s Juggernaut video from last Friday.
First screenshots of Dungeons of Dredmor expansion, Veganism being added as a skill
The men behind our favorite $5 game thus-far in 2011 just offered the first look at Dungeons of Dredmor’s expansion via Twitter. The screens reveal two of the new skillsets being added to Dredmor: Big Game Hunter—presumably a set of abilities that rewards monster maiming—and its more ethically-conscious counterpart, Veganism.
Great, now I want to build a vegan werewolf-assassin in Skyrim. Your move, Bethesda.
New Minecraft documentary trailer sneak peek—watch Notch code exploding arrows
Submitted for your delight, an exclusive clip of 2 Player Productions’ documentary Minecraft: The Story of Mojang. We’re thrilled to share this with you as a part of our special Minecraft episode of PC Gamer Digital, which hit Steam moments ago.
It’s really something to see Notch pick Minecraft apart in realtime. It’s like seeing the game face-up on a surgeon’s table, code exposed through a gaping chest cavity, as the kindest Swede in the world sifts its guts and tries to find a place to fit an organ that spews exploding arrows.
Look forward to the full film in Summer 2012. Follow its progress at 2playerproductions.com or by following the talented team on Twitter.

Tonight: Microsoft vs. Zynga in the StarCraft 2 After Hours Gaming League finals
Can Bing’s Banelings best Farmville’s Ghosts? Tonight, Microsoft and Zynga are going to settle their differences in StarCraft 2. The tech competitors face each other in the final of the After Hours Gaming League, a for-charity tournament between top tech companies in Silicon Valley. Starting at 6 PM PST, tonight’s final is the culmination of a month-some of round robin action between Yelp, Amazon, and others.
StarCraft 2′s self-professed “funsmith” Day[9] will be doing the commentary, streamed here and embedded after the jump. To the winner: $5000 for the charity of their choice and immeasurable bragging rights.
I’m running out the door now to attend the tournament. For on-site updates, follow me at @elahti as I make the trip from PC Gamer to Facebook HQ, where the finals are being hosted.
First Dota 2 trailer released
