Terrraria patch 1.1 to add new bosses, monsters, NPCs, hard mode and Unreal Megashark
Terraria 1.1 will be released on December 1, according to a post from the developers on the Terraria forums. The huge update will add 39 new monsters, four new bosses (including a hideous Wall of Flesh), three NPCs, 222 items, four armour sets and 21 accessories.
Re-logic haven’t revealed too much information, preferring to let players discover the new items and bosses for themselves when the update hits. They do say that there’s a new hard mode activated by “taking revenge” on The Guide NPC in hell. You’ll then have to “destroy a giant creature made out of left over body parts that pukes up worms and shoot lasers out of it’s eyes” to unlock the new challenges and harder enemies. “You will probably die. A lot” warns Redigit on the Terraria forums.
Star Wars: The Old Republic trailer shows Jedi Consular skill path and broom hats
The new Star Wars: The Old Republic trailer shows the power progression for the Jedi consular class. More importantly, it shows us the fastest possible route of progression to the silliest hats in the game. Consulars start out with the slightly lame ability to bombard foes with pebbles, but can become a stealthy ninja type, or a powerful support wizard with a broom hat for clean, dust free ceilings. The Old Republic is less than a month away. It’s arriving on December 20.
This week’s best free PC games
This week, there’s a war being waged. But whose side are you on? Fail-Deadly presents a smart twist on the tower defence genre, asking you to keep the battle going for as long as possible. Also: getting lost in space, being a miserable robot, and clicking on a lone flower on a grey screen. Exciting times in the world of free PC games…
Thanksgiving sales and the PC Gamer Rig
How much money could you save by buying the PC Gamer Rig this week, thanks to the various Black Friday bargains that are going around? Are PC components even included in any of these seasonal fire sales?
To find out, we’ve done the shopping around for you.
Yes, Black Friday was technically yesterday, but the whole phenomenon is a relatively new one on these shores and I’m really only just starting to be aware of it. Besides, it seems to be more of a week long event than just one now, and this weekend is really when the bargains are to be found.
So if you’re looking to build or upgrade your PC before Christmas, today could be the best day to do it.
A reminder – the PC Gamer Rig is our desktop for the average gamer. It’s not the fastest PC you can build, or the cheapest, but it is the one that we think is the best possible value and will comfortably play any game now and in the foreseeable future for £1000/$1500.
Saturday Crapshoot: The Unicorn Killer
Every week, Richard Cobbett rolls the dice to bring you an obscure slice of gaming history, from lost gems to weapons grade atrocities. This week, we head out to catch a real criminal!
In the world of PC gaming, the people are represented by two separate, yet equally important groups. The police who investigate crime and casual gaming companies willing to churn out games about some staggeringly inappropriate things. Like this – a casual game based on a real-world killer, currently serving his time. Fun! His name is Ira Einhorn, and he evaded justice for 25 years after beating his ex-girlfriend Holly Maddux to death and stashing her corpse in his closet to fester. Yes. Really.
This is the story of how he was captured. According to Real Crimes: The Unicorn Killer.
And in other PC gaming news…
It was a normal night, I was relaxing in stately PC Gamer manor, brooding on the deaths of my parents, trying to figure out how to avenge them. Then suddenly, smash! A copy of Batman: Arkham City crashed through the steam window! Suddenly my course was set, for computerised criminals are a superstitious and cowardly lot, and would surely flee before my fists of justice. Yes father, I shall become a bat.
Swoop from the rooftops to find a selection of PC gaming batnews.
Mists of Pandaria talent calculator calculates talent
We’ve known that upcoming World of Warcraft expansion Mists of Pandaria overhauls the game’s talent system, but the game’s new talent calculator – pointed out by Eurogamer – lets you see exactly how it’s going to work. Instead of accumulating talent points, each time you reach a multiple of level 15 you unlock a new talent, giving you the potential of six skills all the way up to level 90.

Star Wars: The Old Republic testers facing up to eight hour queues to log in
Star Wars: The Old Republic is about to start a mammoth weekend of testing. The event is designed to stress test the Old Republic servers, but based on current sign in queues, players might not get the chance to see much of the game. Players trying to log in at the moment are looking at up to an eight hour wait to get in. That doesn’t bode too well for The Old Republic’s launch next month, when it’s sure to face similar numbers as players rush to roll their first character in the Star Wars MMO.
Choose your own switch keyboards from QPAD
It’s a dilemma we’ve all faced and I’m sure is familiar to all: ‘Which Cherry MX switches should I get in my next keyboard, red or blue?’* Swedish peripheral designer QPAD understands the agony of being forced into the wrong decision for your fingertips, and is giving you the freedom to choose your own key types next time you buy a ‘board.
I Am Alive dev retracts PC hate
As we reported yesterday, I Am Alive’s creative director Stanislas Mettra’s comments have caused an uproar among PC Gamers. In an interview with IncGamers, Mettra said that his game wouldn’t be coming to the PC due to “bitching” (not in a good way) PC gamers and the levels of piracy apparently afflicting our beloved platform.
In a statement to Incgamers today, Mettra retracted his comments, putting it down to errors in translation. “I would really love to see a pc build of the game and I dont think I meant to say ‘the game won’t happen on pc,’” he said. “It’s probably an English language miscommunication (I am not native English speaker).”
Introversion teases Prison Architect with virtual treasure hunt
Oh Introversion, why must you tease us so? We’ve just received a mysterious email from the indie developer, whose games form the core of the latest Hundle Indie Bundle. The email reads:
“We are running a sneaky treasure hunt and we wanted to give you the next clue. This is ready to be released immediately, and it’s exclusively yours to do with as you wish.
“The clues are all from Introversion’s next game Prison Architect, and showcase Ryan Sumo’s amazing art.
“Some of the clues are buried in the Humble Introversion Bundle.”
GTA 5 trailer remade, shot by shot, in the GTA 4 engine
This is the Grand Theft Auto 5 trailer, recreated in Grand Theft Auto 4, as spotted on CVG. The GTA 5 trailer didn’t strike us as a huge visual leap forward for the series when we first watched it, but it makes GTA 4 look positively dreary. I wonder what it would look like if someone did a similar recreation with a few GTA 4 mods installed. You’ll find the debut GTA 5 trailer below for comparison.
Steam Autumn Sale continues: Total War, LA Noire, VVVVVV, Fallout: New Vegas super cheap
What’s this, every Total War title except Shogun and Shogun 2, with all accompanying DLC for just £8.74 / $12.49? What are you doing to us, Steam sale? I was planning to eat, and perhaps sleep this weekend but NO, you have to throw hundreds of hours of world class strategy gaming at me for a price that my buying finger can’t not click on.
Wait, there’s more? Gravity mangling platformer VVVVVV, for just 99p / $1.24? That’s less than I paid for my cup of coffee this morning. The slick shouting-at-people-until-they-crack simulator LA Noire, which has only been out for two minutes, is half price. And Fallout: New Vegas and all its DLC packs are available at prices that make the upcoming Ultimate Edition seem a little redundant.
Amazon UK’s Black Friweek is disappointing
Today is the vaguely sinister-sounding Black Friday, which actually began on Monday (according to Amazon) and ends on Sunday (according to HMV). Next year, Black Friday is set to last a whole year. Although we were hugely excited about the prospect of getting some cheap PC games and kit from amazon.co.uk, for the most part it’s been fairly disappointing.
In the US, titles like Battlefield 3, Crysis 2, Metro 2033 and Starcraft II have all been heavily discounted. In the UK the deals have been limited to games like Assassin’s Creed and Saints Row 3 – but only on consoles. Hardware has been similarly disappointing, with overpriced Logitech webcams and mice being reduced so they’re priced normally.
