Bulletstorm missing PC features

A lack of customization options has been frustrating many players booting up Bulletstorm after its release in America earlier this week. A slim range of tweakable options is making it difficult for players to set up their game. Mouse smoothing is locked on, the maximum framerate is locked to 62fps and there are no field of view options. Fortunately, there are workarounds, but using them means hacking into the encrypted .ini files.

I want to be just like these guys, except that Grundy fellow. He's kinda gross.

Today, we talk with DC Universe Online’s Game Director Chris Cao about character creation, future Power Sets being added to the game and how the development team had to choose between quality and quantity in development. If you’re playing DCUO as much as we are, be sure to read the earlier parts of the interview, where Chris talks with us about animation glitching and developer priorities and the planned monthly content updates (hint: Penguin’s coming!), and tune in each day this week for more insight into our current favorite MMO.

Battlefield 3_2

I think we can all agree that there’s nothing quite as exciting as a giant countdown, especially when our first glimpse of Skyrim is waiting at the other end. The trouble is, like with painfully slow downloads and loading bars, it’s hard to tear your eyes away from the progress bar as it slowly inches closer.

Never fear, we’ve got plenty to distract you from those ticking seconds. How about the new Battlefield 3 trailer? It’s got guns, and army men carrying them. So far it’s checking all the right boxes, but we can’t wait for a more in depth look at that enormous city map. It’s looking spectacular.

In other news, Ubisoft have rowed back on their always-on DRM for Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, Test Drive Unlimited 2 got patched, and Rich is obsessed with StarCraft 2. Okay, that last bit we knew already, but his quest to reach Gold League is a bit like a superhero origin story, where all the superpowers have been replaced with mad clicking skills, and the Batcave has been replaced by a dark, dark bedroom.

But so much more has been happening in the world of PC gaming. More than even our augmented titanium typing fingers can cover. Read on for everything you need to know.

The Elder Scrolls V moody man

A clock has appeared on Bethesda’s site, counting down ominously to the launch of the official Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim site in 22 hours and counting. The countdown page promises that tomorrow’s launch will give us the first in-game footage of Skyrim.

There’s a desktop wallpaper available to download too, if you like the idea of a menacing man glaring at you from the peak of a dark mountain every time you turn your PC on. You’ll find plenty more on Skyrim in our preview feature in the latest issue of PC Gamer UK.

Epic have announced a ten-times increase on the royalty cap for games created with the Unreal Development Kit. The free software kit is powerful enough to let anyone create a game using Unreal Engine 3. Before now, games earning profits of more than $5,000 would have to make royalty payments to Epic. The royalty cap now stands at $50,000, making it easier for new developers to get started.

Getting to gold league in Starcraft 2

Getting to gold league in Starcraft II thumbnail

There are some things I’m just no good at. Maths. Skateboarding. Washing my clothes and folding them up in a cupboard before I need them. Before StarCraft II was released, I had assumed its multiplayer segment would be added to this painful list.

My prior experience came secondhand; stories of Korean men fighting other Korean men at the speed of light. I watched a few videos. “Their poor wrists” was all I could think. People said words like ‘APM’ as if they were real things, made jokes about needing more pylons. Haha! What’s a pylon?

StarCraft II makes you play at least five practice matches before you’re allowed onto Battle.net’s permanently ranked ladder system. I tried one. I knew I’d lose.

I won. I won again. And again. I lost my fourth and fifth games, but we don’t talk about those. I was – as my placement in the silver league now confirmed – Not Bad At StarCraft II. For my spare time, that was bad news.
