In three hours, Cataclysm, the third expansion to World of Warcraft, launches in the UK. I’m going to liveblog the whole thing, from server restart to our first log-in, through to the first dungeon, and my inevitable early death when we go to bed at around 4am. To say I’m excited is to understate just how much I’ve been looking forward to the launch of this. I’m PC Gamer’s biggest WoW nerd, and the leader of our ridiculously awesome, 416 character World of Warcraft guild.

You are not prepared for the multiple nerdgasms that are about to follow.

World of Warcraft: Cataclysm First Impressions

At midnight tonight, World of Warcraft: Cataclysm finally launches. Thanks to a staggered deployment of new features and content, about half of what Cataclysm offers to MMO players old and new is already in the game. That includes re-worked Azeroth, new combat mechanics, improved dungeons and some slightly improved graphics technology.

And it’s good. Really, really good. The World of Warcraft of today is streets ahead of the World of Warcraft that launched six years ago. And the new levelling content that’s been added finally brings the opening stages of the game to the same quality and entertainment levels that veteran players will have seen with the previous two expansion packs.

Right now, WoW is a phenomenally entertaining game; and I think you should take the free trial and have a play right now. You don’t even need to buy the new expansion to have a poke about the new Azeroth.

A new edition of Eve Online aimed at new players is set to be released in the UK this Friday. The Commissioned Officer edition will come at a budget price, and will give new characters free stat-boosting brain implants. The new edition won’t offer anything new for players who already have characters, but if you’ve always fancied trying CCP’s interstellar MMO, the new edition could be a good way to get started.
