Here I am to offer some unsolicited advice. Along with the Unofficial Patch you should definitely get the updated <a href="http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=27710" title="Unofficial Patch Supplemental" rel="nofollow">. You may also wish to use a combination of the weather mod All Natural, Enhanced Vegetation, & HD Water instead of Natural Environments.

Ah, my mistake DarN, the colour map must have installed when I was testing one of the texture packs and I assumed it was part of the UI overhaul. Still, the real meat of the mod is the slicker, infinitely more sensible interface, and that's definitely in there.

I dislike mods that change the core gameplay and such... I look at games as art, like a movie, and not to be modified on that level. I do love the Darnified UI though and Immersive Interface... those are essential.

I'm honored to be included in such excellent company. :)

I should point out though, that DUI does not include a colored world map. It has an option for a colored <i>local</i> one during the install, but the world map is left vanilla. The map in the above picture is the <a href="http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=1950" title="Color Map" rel="nofollow">Color Map</a> mod by p1p3. Maps (and map icons) are simply texture mods, and are fully compatible with DUI. This includes "Eleven map redux", p0rtalthinker. ;)

the unofficial patch is an exe you don't need OBMM to use an exe, eseentially there are two (three inc exes) mods files for Oblivion, one is a .esp which all you have to do is drag the files to their respective folders, with .omod one will have to double click (considering OBMM has been installed already) the .omod file will appear at the middle of the obmm window, simply select it and press activate - the mod will install accordingly

Great article. Thanks. I didn't know that there were so many improvements to the game. I got tired of playing the original fairly early on but now I'm going to reinstall it and give it another try with these mods.

SSH83's PC Gamer DVD comment is a good idea. Generally the DVD is mostly useless to me as I have an Internet connection and can get all the demos there nowadays.

But, a custom PC Gamer made installer which installed all of a recommended Oblivion/Fallout3/Stalker etc. mod set would be of value to me.

@phanatic62 The Oblivion Mod Manager, obmm, has a pretty thorough readme. It's been the best resource in my experience. The Elder Scrolls Construction Set Wiki may also help: http://cs.elderscrolls.com/constwiki/index.php/Oblivion_Mods_FAQ#How_do_I_install_mods.3F You should also download the Oblivion Script Extender, obse, and place it in your Oblivion "data" folder. Many mods utilize it.

I would say it really depends on what character you're playing what mods are essential or not. OOO/Francesco's don't play nice with many mods, so I don't use them. I'd suggest Quarl's Textures, UL, BC, and Darnified UI (I like the darkui'd Darnified UI best) BE warned, though, some of the texture packs and graphic enhancements REALLY take a toll on your performance. Better Cities especially. If you barely meed Oblivion's reccommended system specs in the first place, these graphic enhancements may not be a good idea. If you have a newer, more powerful PC, however, go for it!

I love modding PC games. Oblivion and Fallout 3, are some of the best examples of why modding and SDK is soo important to the life span of games.

I still fire up Oblivion once a year or so to get my fix, and when i do there is a huge pile of new mods for me to try.

Look at the Farcry series, the 1st one supported mods and ppl still play that game. Now look at the mess part 2 is. No sdk, no mods, only crappy over priced DLC. I haven't seen a game die as fast as farcry 2 in a long time.

Does anyone know of a good walkthrough/tutorial for OBMM? I downloaded it and tried to use it but could not figure it out for the life of me. I'm generally pretty good with things like it but this program just baffles me.

mouzer is totally right! Here's a link to Oblivion Mod Manager, everyone: http://bit.ly/8lgaI7. It lets you see all the mods you have installed, and gives you the ability to turn them on and off individually, so if one of them's causing trouble you can just unload it.

If you want the game to look and run better then go for 1, 4, 7, 8 and 9. After that I'd recommend adding Oscuro's OR Francescos, and then experimenting with adding Marts and Midas. Personally, I've found that Deadly Reflex doesn't sit well with the major overhauls, but others may have more luck.

FCOM is designed to install Oscuro's Overhaul, Francesco's, Marts Mutant mod and WarCry at the same time, but in my experience its been a pain to get it all working, and you might find yourself in the situation that srjones mentioned, where you end up spending more time installing and tweaking the mods than actually playing Oblivion. With a bit of patience, though, it's perfectly possible to get them all working together. Oblivion's a completely differernt game after that.

I'm surprised that Better Cities isn't even mentioned, it makes the cities a far more interesting place to be.

I think I tried all of them except for Midas. A whole lot of work has gone into these and it really improves the game. I found that I was spending more time downloading and trying to get mods to work then actually playing though so I have not tried it for a bit.

It seems like there might be a few conflicts between 2, 5 & 10. I too would like a recommended set to be installed all at once.
FCOM adds Warcry, does that play well will the others?

Would the recommended list be:
1
3
4
6
7
8
9
and FCOM?

This is awesome, really makes me want to go back and play the game again. After some of these mods, I'm really considering it.

Will download all these, thanks. Apart from the monster mod one, will the rest work together well? Also, loving the recent oblivion articles, such an amazing game!
